Old Man’s Beard Moss

Usnea barbata (commonly known as Old Man’s Beard, Beard Lichen, or Beard Moss) is a species of fruticose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae.

Like all lichens, it is not a single plant, but a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and a photosynthesizing alga.

Key Characteristics & Facts

• Appearance: Looks like pale gray-green, hair-like or thread-like strands hanging from tree branches. A key identifier for Usnea species is an elastic white central core inside each strand when pulled apart.

• Habitat: Grows on trees and shrubs in temperate, humid forest ecosystems worldwide. Because it absorbs nutrients directly from air and rainwater, it is highly sensitive to pollution and serves as a natural bioindicator of air quality.
